Green neon tetras, also known as green cardinal tetras (scientific name: Paracheirodon simulans), are small fish. Adult specimens reach an approximate length of 2–3 centimeters. Their body shape is similar to that of neon tetras (Paracheirodon innesi), being slender and laterally compressed. A bright blue horizontal stripe runs from the tip of their snout to the end of their caudal peduncle. A thinner blue band is occasionally visible on their lower abdomen, and their bodies are transparent with a subtle sheen.
Analysis of Physical & Behavioral Traits
1. Slender, Laterally Compressed Body
Their narrow, elongated body is a classic trait of Characidae (the characin family). This body structure allows them to swim quickly in the soft, acidic blackwater streams of their natural habitat.
2. Size Comparison
Compared to their close relative, the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi, 3–4 cm in adult length), green neon tetras are smaller. However, their blue body stripes are more vivid and distinct.
3. Shoaling Behavior
They have a gentle, active temperament and primarily swim in the middle water column. They thrive in groups, so keeping them in shoals is recommended. They are well-suited for community tanks with other fish of similar size or as inhabitants of planted aquariums.
