Why isn't my betta fish eating?

Here are some common reasons why your betta fish may stop eating and corresponding solutions:

  🌟 Environmental Adaptation Issues

Newly arrived betta fish need 2-3 days of quiet rest to adapt. Place them in a dark, quiet area and avoid frequent water changes or disturbances.

Sudden changes in tank location or water quality fluctuations can also cause stress-induced loss of appetite.

  🌡️ Abnormal Water Temperature

Water temperatures below 20°C significantly reduce appetite. Use a heater to maintain 25-28°C (26°C is optimal).

Excessive day-night temperature differences (over 5°C) may lead to "fish cold" symptoms, such as fin clamping and staying at the tank bottom.

  💧 Water Quality Problems

High ammonia levels or chlorinated tap water irritate the fish. Use aged water or mineral water as a transition.

Change 1/3 of the water weekly and add Indian almond leaves to improve water quality.

  🍽️ Feeding-Related Issues

Long-term single-type feed may cause anorexia. Try switching brands or offering live food (bloodworms/fish fry).

If pellets are too large, bettas may refuse to eat due to difficulty swallowing.

  ⚠️ Health Warnings

Enteritis: Accompanied by white feces and bloating. Fast the fish and treat with oxytetracycline bath.

Ich (White Spot Disease): White spots on the body. Raise temperature to 30°C and use methylene blue.

Dropsy: Swelling behind the gills and floating. Isolate immediately and treat with methylene blue bath.

  🛠️ Quick Checklist

Observe for abnormal spots or swelling on the body.

Ensure water temperature stays stable at ~26°C.

Check if water has a fishy odor.

Use a mirror to test if the betta flares its fins (healthy fish show territorial behavior).

If the betta still refuses to eat after ruling out the above, isolate it to prevent cross-infection. In most cases, appetite will return within 3-5 days with stable water temperature and quality.
