What can you put with betta fish?

The fish that can be kept with bettas include: zebra danios, guppies, blacktail tetra, angelfish, neon tetras, plecos, mollies, platyfish, gouramis, swordtails, algae-eating loaches, etc. When mixing these fish with bettas, the following points need attention:

  Space and Shelters

Bettas have strong territorial awareness. When keeping them with other fish, ensure there is enough space and shelters such as aquatic plants, artificial rocks, and hiding caves. This allows other fish to have places to escape bettas' attacks.

  Water Quality

Maintaining clean and stable water quality is key to successful mixed breeding. Equip a good filtration system to ensure water quality and the ecological balance of the fish tank, which helps reduce conflicts.

  Observation and Intervention

In the early stage of mixed breeding, closely observe the interaction between bettas and other fish. Once bettas show aggressive behavior, take timely measures such as separating them or adding more shelters.

In addition, bettas are suitable for mixing with mild-tempered, small-sized, or fast-swimming fish. For example:

Zebra Danios: They have slender bodies, swim fast, and have gentle temperaments, making them less likely to conflict with bettas.

Guppies: Male bettas can coexist peacefully with guppies, especially female bettas and guppy groups. Bettas seem to "fear" guppy schools.

Neon Tetras: With small sizes and fast swimming speed, they can easily avoid bettas' attacks, making them suitable for mixed breeding.

Plecos: They mainly move at the bottom of the tank and feed on leftover food and debris. Their activity areas do not overlap with those of bettas, so there is not much conflict.

Algae-Eating Loaches: They are small in size, prefer to move at the bottom of the tank, and have gentle temperaments, so they will not actively attack bettas.
