Betta Fish (Siamese Fighting Fish) Compatible Tank Mates & Mixing Tips
Due to their strong territorial instincts and aggressive nature, choose tank mates for bettas carefully. Here are suitable species and key considerations:

1. Recommended Tank Mates
Top-Layer Swimmers
- Guppies: Small and fast-swimming, they occupy different water layers (bettas prefer mid-to-lower zones).
- White Cloud Minnows: Peaceful schooling fish that adapt to slightly acidic water, similar to betta preferences.
Bottom-Dwelling Cleaners
- Dwarf Suckers or Corydoras Catfish: Algae-eating "worker fish" that rarely bother bettas.
Peaceful Tetras
- Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras: Highly social, small, and non-aggressive. Ensure bettas don’t see them as prey.
2. Key Cohabitation Conditions
Tank Environment
- Use at least a 10-gallon (40L) tank with dense plants or driftwood to divide territories.
- Maintain water temperature at 77–82°F (25–28°C) to suit both bettas and tropical species.
Behavior Monitoring
- If a betta continuously chases or attacks others, isolate it immediately.
- Start with a clear tank divider to help fish acclimate to each other.
3. Absolutely Avoid These Species
- Other Bettas (including same species): Guaranteed to fight to the death.
- Tiger Barbs, Skirt Tetras: Prone to nipping bettas’ long fins.
- Large Cichlids (like Oscars): Will dominate or even eat bettas.
Note: Success depends heavily on individual temperaments—always monitor and adjust as needed.
