Betta fish do have the ability to bite, but their aggressiveness and actual harm need to be analyzed based on specific circumstances:
Likelihood of Biting
Though bettas have small teeth, they will actively attack objects like human fingers that enter their water, especially during breeding periods or when startled. However, due to their size constraints (adults only reach 6-10 cm in length), their bite force is weak, usually causing only a slight stinging sensation.
Triggers for Attack
Breeding season: Male bettas become more aggressive when protecting their eggs;
Mistaken identity: Fingers may be attacked if mistaken for food or a threat;
Stress response: Sudden changes in light or tapping on the tank can easily trigger an attack.
Actual Risk Level
Compared to large, ferocious fish like piranhas, betta bites are low-risk incidents that don’t require special medical treatment. However, note the following:
Uncleaned wounds may become infected (probability < 5%);
Children should avoid touching them with bare hands when keeping bettas.
Care Recommendations
Use tools (such as a fish net) instead of hands when changing water or cleaning the tank;
Individuals with strong aggressiveness can be isolated separately.
If bitten, it’s advisable to disinfect the wound with iodine and monitor it for 24 hours. Seek medical attention if redness or swelling occurs.
